Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
