A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
