Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
